Veneto
Located between Lake Garda and Valpolicella, Le Fraghe is the project of Matilde Poggi and began with the 1984 vintage, into the south and east of Lake Garda, in the appellation of Bardolino. In dialect, Le Fraghe means fragole, “strawberries,” which are found among her vineyards. She has been working organically since 2009 and her estate encompasses about 28 hectares.
“Le Fraghe” is made from 80% Corvina and 20% Rondinella, grapes that are also grown in nearby Valpolicella, but typically made in a lighter style in Bardolino. The grapes are vinified separately, in stainless steel, where it rested until bottling in the spring.
The wine is fresh and bright, with aromas of crisp, ripe berry fruit, citrus zest, cinnamon and peppercorn, and a lightly floral note. Medium-bodied on the palate, it is best served with a slight chill and pairs well with lighter dishes, from cumin-baked pork chops to grilled fish, and young, fresh cheeses.
